The Mindful Art of Dumpling Making

In this hands-on vegetarian dumpling class, Grace Young demystifies the art of making delicious dumplings from scratch. In Chinese culture, dumpling making has long been a communal tradition, bringing generations together around the table to cook, talk and pass along culinary knowledge and traditions. The rhythmic act of filling, folding and shaping dumplings invites us to slow down and be present, while the shared experience creates a natural space for conversation and connection. Traditionally associated with prosperity and good fortune dumplings are also a fitting symbol of abundance nourishment and the enduring wisdom found in cooking and gathering together.

What happens when a celebrated culinary career takes an unexpected turn? In 2020, as the world shut down, Grace Young—James Beard Award–winning cookbook author—felt her lifelong path shift. A visit to Manhattan’s Chinatown revealed a community in crisis, its small businesses fighting to survive. Moved by what she saw, Grace traded her test kitchen for the front lines of advocacy. With no prior experience as an activist, she began using her voice to rally national attention. Her work has since sparked a movement, garnered international recognition, and earned her a place on Forbes 50 Over 50. In this powerful conversation, Grace shares how she discovered a deeper calling at a time when most people think about winding down.

Grace Young is an award-winning cookbook author who believes that cooking can nourish both body and spirit. Dubbed the “Stir-Fry Guru” by The New York Times, she is known for her Stir-Fry Guru video series for Weight Watchers, where she shared the ease, versatility, and healthfulness of cooking with a wok. A three-time James Beard Award winner, including Humanitarian of the Year for her work to preserve and protect America’s Chinatowns, and recipient of the Julia Child Award, Grace brings decades of experience—and a deep love of Chinese culinary traditions—to her classes. Her goal is to inspire people to cook with fresh ingredients, greater mindfulness, and the joy that comes from making something delicious for yourself and others.
